Namibia drives on the left side of the road and uses the Namibian dollar, which is pegged to the African rand. The sockets are of type D and M.
During the partition of Africa towards the end of the 19th century, the area that is now Namibia fell under German rule for about 30 years. The legacy of the Germans lives on to this day, so you can still see things like street signs, buildings and even schools that teach German as a trade language. But only about 2-3% of the population speak German. The official language is English, but the three most commonly spoken languages in Namibian households are: Oshiwambo - also known as Ovambo (48.9% of households), Khoekhoegowab - also known as Khoekhoe (11.3%) and Afrikaans (10.4%).
You will not need camping equipment as we provide tents, sleeping bags and camping gear. However, you are welcome to use your own sleeping bag if you wish to bring one. In this case, please let us know.
We recommend that you bring a headlamp or other flashlight in case you need to use the toilet at night as it gets very dark outside.
Please bring your own yoga mat, towel, camera and possibly binoculars :)
In January, the weather in Sossusvlei and Etosha National Park in Namibia can be quite different.
Etosha National Park: January is the rainy season in northern Namibia, including the region around Etosha National Park. However, "rainy season" in this region does not mean constant rainfall, but rather sporadic and localized showers. Temperatures during the day can be very hot, often exceeding 30°C (86°F). Mornings and evenings can be slightly cooler, but overall it is a hot and humid season. The rains bring some greenery to the park, and wildlife can be seen enjoying the newly available water sources. This is the best time to see the Big 5.
Sossusvlei: Sossusvlei is located in the Namib Desert, and January falls in the summer season. Expect hot and dry weather during this time. Daytime temperatures in Sossusvlei can easily rise above 30°C (86°F).
Swakopmund: Swakopmund, situated along the Atlantic coast, has a different climate compared to other parts of the country. January belongs to the southern hemisphere summer season, but temperatures are moderated by the cool Benguela Current. Daytime temperatures in Swakopmund can range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F) in January, which is much milder compared to inland parts of the country. However, the nights can get quite chilly, so it is advisable to bring layers of clothing for the evenings.
