Alkaline fasting – what is it? By avoiding acids, the acid-base balance in the body is restored. Don't worry, fasting does not mean starving yourself! It is simply a matter of following a diet plan. However, weight loss can be a nice side effect of the change in diet. How does alkaline fasting work?
During alkaline fasting, you eat only alkaline foods for a week. Your diet is changed to include fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, kernels, and mushrooms. Acids, especially grains and animal protein, are avoided. It is also important to drink plenty of fluids. Two to three liters of water a day, ideally spring water, or tea made from natural herbs are allowed.
Why alkaline fasting? A balanced acid-base balance is important because too many acids in the body can no longer be excreted via the kidneys and intestines. Bases then take over the neutralization process. If the minerals in the blood are depleted, the body must resort to alkaline potassium, magnesium, and calcium in muscles, bones, and teeth. An excessively acidic diet can therefore lead to cramps, osteoporosis, tooth decay, cardiac arrhythmia, allergies, gout, or neurodermatitis. An alkaline diet is intended to counteract this and also raise awareness of healthy eating.
