When is the best time to travel for a hiking holiday in Germany?
The best travel time depends on the region. For mid-range mountains such as the Black Forest, Sauerland, Eifel or Harz, the main window runs from early April to mid-November. The pre-Alps and the Bavarian Alps are reliably accessible from May to mid-October — before that, snowfields often linger above the tree line, and afterwards many mountain huts close their season.
If you want beautiful landscape combined with quiet trails, choose April to early June: fresh deciduous forests, flowering meadows, long days and temperatures between eighteen and twenty-two degrees. September is also considered the strongest phase by many hikers — cool mornings, clear light, and noticeably less traffic on the premium trails.
July and August are the core season for the pre-Alps and Bavarian Alps. In the northern mid-range mountains, by contrast, midsummer can feel oppressive. If you are looking for cooler air, altitudes above eight hundred metres or the Baltic coast are a better fit.
From mid-November to March, hiking shifts to a few regions only — snowshoe tours in the high Black Forest, in the Allgaeu or in the Harz are possible, in shorter daily stages and with additional equipment.
Which region in Germany fits me?
The right region depends on fitness, travel style and prior experience. If you want a classic middle-mountain hiking holiday with forests, high pastures and a well-kept inn culture, the Black Forest, the Sauerland or the Eifel are a good fit. Altitudes lie between four hundred and thirteen hundred metres, trails are very well marked, and stages are usually between eight and fifteen kilometres long — well suited to beginners and mid-level tours.
If you want pre-Alpine or Alpine altitude, choose the Allgaeu or the Bavarian Alps. Here daily stages are longer, the altitude gain is higher, and walking requires a certain surefootedness on alpine trails. These regions are particularly suited to more experienced hikers and multi-day tours from hut to hut.
If you are looking for a gentle, coastal hiking holiday with little gradient, Ruegen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern or the North Sea coast fit well. These regions are ideal for beginners, older hikers and families — the stages run along chalk-cliff paths, through beech forests and beside long sandy beaches, with easily accessible stage towns and a low difficulty level.
What prior experience do I need for a hiking holiday in Germany?
For most German hiking regions, you do not need alpine experience. Lower mountain ranges such as the Black Forest, the Sauerland, the Eifel and the Harz are explicitly designed for hikers without mountain background. Anyone who can walk three to five hours at a stretch without reaching their limit is well placed here.
For pre-Alpine and Alpine stays in the Allgaeu or the Bavarian Alps, an honest self-assessment is worthwhile. Daily stages of five to seven hours with five hundred to nine hundred metres of climbing require a certain base level of fitness. Sure-footedness on mountain paths and carrying a day pack on your own are standard.
Professional tours — alpine multi-day routes with via ferrata sections or crossings above two thousand seven hundred metres — are rare but possible. They require mountain experience, a full alpine kit and usually a mountain guide.
Many operators describe difficulty on a multi-level scale (easy / medium / hard) and indicate altitude gain, walking time and stage length per day. A short test hike at home before the trip is a good preparation.
What is typically included in the price of a hiking holiday in Germany?
Service packages differ by trip type. A classic guided hiking holiday usually includes: accommodation with half-board (breakfast and three-course dinner), the company of a local mountain or hiking guide, luggage transfer from stage to stage, detailed maps and route descriptions, and smaller programme items such as a brewery tasting or a museum tour.
For an individual, pack-carrying hiking holiday, the price usually covers accommodation with half-board or breakfast only. Mountain guide, luggage transfer and maps are optional add-ons. This variant is noticeably cheaper and suits experienced hikers who value their own pace.
As a rule of thumb: when comparing offers, pay attention to the arrival (train station versus airport transfer), the catering class (breakfast, half-board, full board) and whether a mountain guide is included. These three points explain most of the price differences between offers in the same region.
What is the best way to travel to a hiking holiday in Germany?
Arrival by train is almost always the best option in Germany. Practically every hiking region — from the Black Forest to the Allgaeu, the Sauerland, the Harz and on to Ruegen — is covered by ICE and regional services. Many stage towns have a train station within walking distance of the trail, so you can start without a car.
If you want to bring your own car, check in advance whether the hotel offers a park-and-ride service to the trail start or end point. For point-to-point tours — meaning hikes that do not return to the starting point — the train is far easier.
German hiking regions are typically reachable from central Europe within two to six train hours. If you are coming from further away, you fly to Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart or Hamburg and switch to the train there — the train stations are directly accessible underneath the airports.

Do I have to carry my luggage myself, or is there a luggage transfer?
Both are common. Classic hiking holidays — meaning stage tours from town to town — were for a long time done exclusively with your own pack. This variant still has a following because it concentrates the hiking experience most fully: you carry everything you need and arrive in the evening with the clear feeling of having completed a self-contained stage.
In practice, almost all premium trails in Germany today — Westweg, Rothaarsteig, Eifelsteig, Heidschnuckenweg, Goldsteig — offer an organised luggage transfer. You hand over your main luggage in the morning at the accommodation, walk the stage with a light day pack (water, rain jacket, lunch bread, map), and your suitcase is waiting at the next stage destination in the evening. Guided trips — meaning stays with a mountain guide and a fixed base — usually do not involve pack-carrying hiking.
