Hiking holidays in Germany

The choice of region shapes a German hiking holiday more than any other decision. Six landscape areas have established themselves around different focuses, and it is worth checking before booking which one fits your fitness and travel style. The Black Forest in the south-west is the classic choice. Fir forests, high pastures, many premium trails and a well-kept inn culture define the picture. Altitudes between six hundred and thirteen hundred metres, good waymarking and short stage distances make the region ideal for beginners and mid-level tours. The Allgaeu in southern Bavaria goes one step further: this is where the pre-Alps begin, with altitudes up to nearly two thousand four hundred metres, alpine pastures, clear mountain lakes and a continuously open hut season from May to October. The Sauerland and the Eifel are the underrated middle mountains in the west. Trails such as the Rothaarsteig or the Eifelsteig lead across wooded ridges, past reservoirs, volcanic maar lakes and small farming villages. Altitudes lie between four hundred and eight hundred metres, the climate stays pleasantly cool even in high summer, and the paths are walkable all year round. The Harz in the north is the highest mountain range in northern Germany, with the Brocken as the destination of many tours. Beech forests, raised bogs and old mining traces shape the landscape. If you want to go one step further north, Ruegen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offer a very different hiking world: coastal paths along the chalk cliffs, wide beech forests, hardly any gradient, but constantly shifting views of the Baltic. This region is particularly suited to beginners, older walkers and families. As a rule of thumb: if you want a classic middle-mountain experience with good infrastructure, the Black Forest or the Sauerland are right. If you want pre-Alpine altitudes, choose the Allgaeu. If you prefer the coast and a gentle profile, head to Ruegen or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Germany has an unusually long hiking season because the different altitudes complement each other. If you choose the mid-range mountains, you hike in practice from early April to mid-November. If you head into the pre-Alps or Bavarian Alps, you are restricted to the window from May to mid-October — before that snowfields often remain above the tree line, and after that many huts close. The spring from April to mid-June is considered the most beautiful phase by many hikers in the Black Forest, the Sauerland, the Eifel and the Harz. The forests are freshly in leaf, the meadows are flowering, the days grow long, and temperatures sit at a pleasant eighteen to twenty-two degrees during the day. Trails are still little used at this time, many inns and guesthouses offer spring conditions, and the high bogs show their short flowering season. The summer from mid-June to the end of August is high season in the pre-Alps and Bavarian Alps. Days are reliably warm, huts are continuously staffed, and the alpine pastures are fully in operation. In the northern lower mountains, by contrast, midsummer can feel oppressive — the Harz and the Sauerland show their best side in cooler weather. The coastal regions of Ruegen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern benefit from midsummer thanks to the mild Baltic climate, which rarely rises above twenty-five degrees. Autumn from September to mid-November is the second great phase in terms of landscape. Deciduous forests change colour, the light becomes clearer, tours run more quietly, and many hikers call October the strongest hiking month of the year. In the pre-Alps the season runs until the first snow in mid to late October — after that hiking shifts into the lower mountains and the coastal regions. Winter walks remain possible in the high Black Forest, in the Allgaeu and in the Harz, often on snowshoes and with noticeably shorter daily stages.

The daily structure of a German hiking holiday follows a pattern that has grown over decades in inns, guesthouses and mountain huts. It is neither hectic nor exaggeratedly sporty — and that is exactly its appeal for the many guests looking for a quiet, physically active holiday. The day begins early, but not extremely early. Breakfast is served in most houses between seven and nine, often as a buffet with regional sausage and cheese, wholegrain bread, muesli, fruit and a homemade spread. Anyone planning a long stage packs their lunch at the breakfast table — many houses provide bread, cheese, hard-boiled eggs and fruit on request. Departure is typically between eight and nine-thirty, depending on the length of the stage. The stage itself sits at between eight and sixteen kilometres for a typical hiking holiday, with three to six hours of pure walking time. Premium trails such as the Rothaarsteig or the Westweg are divided into daily stages of twelve to seventeen kilometres, so even less experienced guests still have reserves at the end of the day. A longer lunch break at a viewpoint or a mountain inn, a second stop in the late afternoon and quiet walking across open meadows or under beech canopies are part of the standard profile. The afternoon is open. Anyone who arrives early at the stage destination can plan a swim in a mountain lake, visit a brewery or a small museum, or simply use the guesthouse garden to put up their feet. Many houses offer a coffee and cake break in the late afternoon, often with a homemade streusel or Black Forest cake. The evening is the social heart of the day. Three-course menus from regional cooking, a glass of wine or a cool lager, and conversations with fellow hikers, often walking the same path, shape the atmosphere. Anyone preparing for the next stage packs in the evening so the next morning starts relaxed. This daily structure is one of the main reasons why so many hikers return home physically more rested than before the trip.
