At the Source — Back to the Roots of Yoga in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, India

Summary

Six nights in Rishikesh, the birthplace of yoga—on the banks of the Ganges, at the foot of the Himalayas. This yoga retreat in India combines daily practice with philosophy, ritual, and an authentic cultural experience.
Each day begins with morning pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation, followed by asana practice in Hatha, Vinyasa, and Yin Yoga—vigorous in the morning, calm and deep in the afternoon. In workshops, we delve deeper into Thai yoga massage as well as alignment and adjustment: observing, understanding, and precisely guiding postures. The yoga philosophy sessions bring ancient texts into the present—exploring how the mind forms patterns, where attachment arises, and what we want to carry forward into the new year.

Three sacred excursions are included: the Ganga Aarti fire ceremony at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram, sunrise over the Himalayas at the Kunjapuri Temple, and the sacred confluence of two rivers in Devprayag, where the Ganges gets its name.

We intentionally keep the group small—a maximum of 15 people—to allow space for genuine connection, individual attention, and deep relaxation. You’ll be guided by two experienced instructors (who speak both German and English). We’ll be staying at Devlok Homes in Laxman Jhula, a warm and welcoming guesthouse with its own yoga hall and a rooftop terrace overlooking the Ganges.

For yoga teachers: 20 hours of Yoga Alliance Continuing Education (YACEP) are included.

Suitable for all levels with some prior experience—whether you want to deepen your own practice, earn continuing education hours as a teacher, or experience India for the first time with a safe and supportive guide.

Catering

During the retreat, you’ll be treated to three freshly prepared vegetarian meals a day—traditionally Indian-inspired, nutritious, and light, designed to support your daily yoga practice. Water, tea, and fresh chai are also provided.
Vegan, gluten-free, or other dietary preferences are gladly accommodated by prior arrangement—just let us know about any food intolerances or requests when you book, and we’ll take care of it.
A tip from experience: The simple cuisine in Rishikesh is part of the experience—completely free of meat, fish, and eggs, but full of spices, fresh vegetables, and warmth. Many participants take home a recipe or two.

sequence

Here’s what a typical day at the retreat looks like:
The day begins early and quietly: pranayama (breathing exercises) and meditation in the morning as the sun rises over the Ganges. This is followed by a vigorous asana practice (Hatha/Vinyasa), then breakfast on the rooftop terrace with a view of the mountains.
In the morning or early afternoon, we delve deeper into workshops: Thai yoga massage, the art of alignment and adjustments, and yoga philosophy—with time for reflection on what you want to carry forward into the new year. In between, we intentionally set aside free time: for the ghats, a café, a conversation, or simply silence.
The afternoon winds down with a calm, deep Yin practice. After dinner, there’s time to unwind—or we can go out together.
The highlights of the week:

Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan—the evening fire ceremony by the river, with singing, bells, and hundreds of oil lamps floating on the water
Sunrise at Kunjapuri Temple—early in the morning, we drive into the mountains to watch the sun rise over the Himalayan peaks
Devprayag—the sacred confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, where the Ganges gets its name

The arrival and departure days (December 8 and 14) are intentionally kept low-key: arrival, a first shared ritual—and finally a closing circle before we head back out into the world.

Arrival

You’ll need to arrange your own travel—but we’re happy to help with any information and recommendations.
The easiest way: Fly to Delhi (DEL), then take a connecting flight to Dehradun (DED)—the nearest airport, about a 45–60-minute taxi ride from Rishikesh. From Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are good daily connections to Delhi; the domestic flights to Dehradun are short and affordable.
Alternatively: From Delhi, you can also reach Rishikesh by train (to Haridwar or Rishikesh) or by private taxi (about 5–6 hours).
After you book, we’ll send you detailed travel information with all the specifics—including flight recommendations, reliable taxi options from the airport, and tips on the Indian e-visa. We’ll also coordinate the group’s arrival times so that, whenever possible, you can share a ride from the airport with other participants.
Arrival date is December 8; departure is December 14, 2026.
