Painting at Bernried Monastery on Lake Starnberg
Living creativity in a monastic tradition. Finally time to paint again. Whether in the studio or in the enchanting natural surroundings, refresh what you have already learned and deepen your drawing and painting skills. In the spirit of Benedictine hospitality, we are invited to share in the culture of the monastery and the charming Alpine foothills directly on Lake Starnberg. The aim is for course participants to find peace and quiet while working creatively, to encounter themselves and others. The historic building with its extensive garden is located directly on Lake Starnberg. Bernried was the home town of Willhelm Leibl and Olaf Gulbransson. Bernried used to be a popular vacation resort for the Munich artists' colony around Lovis Corinth and Max Halbe. As a community, Bernried attracted many artists in the past as it does today. In 1998, the "Buchheim Museum of the Imagination" was built in the Hirschgarten grounds in Höhenried, which has been a major attraction for visitors from all over the world since 1999.

The relaxation exercises were very motivating. The course instructor responded personally to each individual and provided assistance with painting. Everyone was able to realize their motif, whether in acrylic or watercolor. The theory lessons were very informative.

Bernried Monastery is beautifully situated. A place of peace and contemplation. Wonderful to swim in the lake every day. Excellent cuisine, especially the cake in the afternoon was heavenly. The room was simple, small, clean and the view of the lake very beautiful. The instructor Tanja Gnatz has a warm-hearted charisma and picks up everyone where they are. She gave a lot of good artistic advice. The overall "Bernried" package was very harmonious and I felt very comfortable.

Hello dear retreat team, I am completely enthusiastic, the 5-day course was varied and I have taken home a lot of things I learned. I can highly recommend Tanja Gnatz. I immediately felt at home in the wonderful, quiet monastery. I have already registered for the September 2024 course. Best regards Susanne
Super course! Very nice, sympathetic and competent course instructor.
They were wonderful days in Bernried. As an inexperienced painter, Tanja took me along well and took away my fear of brushes and paint. Through short theory units you quickly understand how it can succeed. The monastery is a wonderful place. Directly on the lake, everyone can jump in the water in the morning, at noon and in the evening, some even in the rain ;-). The lake inspires one, with its colors, to bring them on paper. I was certainly not the last time there. The beginning is made. Thank you Tanja and all participants. When I think of mango, I taste yellow.
