For most German hiking regions, you do not need alpine experience. Lower mountain ranges such as the Black Forest, the Sauerland, the Eifel and the Harz are explicitly designed for hikers without mountain background. Anyone who can walk three to five hours at a stretch without reaching their limit is well placed here. For pre-Alpine and Alpine stays in the Allgaeu or the Bavarian Alps, an honest self-assessment is worthwhile. Arrival by train is almost always the best option in Germany. You hand over your main luggage in the morning at the accommodation, walk the stage with a light day pack (water, rain jacket, lunch bread, map), and your suitcase is waiting at the next stage destination in the evening. This service typically costs a moderate fee per day and is often already included in many operators' package prices. Guided trips — meaning stays with a mountain guide and a fixed base — usually do not involve pack-carrying hiking. Here your main luggage stays at the base hotel, and you head out daily with a small pack on day trips. This format particularly suits beginners or hikers who want to spare their hips or knees.
