4.9Detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg
A detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg moves between the Black Forest, Lake Constance, and the Swabian Jura, across three very different landscapes. Three to seven days in small groups, with methods between Buchinger fasting, base fasting, juice cures, and the F.X. Mayr cure, often combined with gentle yoga, hikes, and sauna sessions. Monastery houses in the high Black Forest, spa venues on Lake Constance, and farm estates on the Swabian Jura carry the programmes. Travel is usually by train to Freiburg, Konstanz, or Tübingen with a short regional onward leg.

Black Forest, Lake Constance, and Swabian Jura
A detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg can be mapped to three clearly distinct landscape areas. The Black Forest in the west is the most established region. The high Black Forest around Titisee and Schluchsee with altitudes between eight hundred and thirteen hundred metres, dense fir forests, and particularly clear mountain air carries a strong detox tradition. Several spa venues and farm estates here work with Buchinger fasting and juice cures.
The Lake Constance area in the south has a clearly different climate. Mild temperatures, an almost Mediterranean character in summer, broad expanses of water, and a relaxed atmosphere shape the programmes. Detox programmes on Lake Constance lean towards wellness-oriented juice cures and the F.X. Mayr cure. The F.X. Mayr cure is a specific method of intestinal cleansing with Epsom salt, alkaline powder, and very light food.
The Swabian Jura east of Tübingen leads into a karst plateau with sparse meadows, juniper heath, and deeply cut valleys. Farm estates and small spa venues on the Jura often work with base fasting and gentle therapeutic fasting, complemented by hikes and sauna sessions. The atmosphere is rougher than on Lake Constance but more undisturbed than the high Black Forest to the south.
Anyone booking a detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg typically comes from Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Freiburg, and the Lake Constance area. A clear subgroup travels from the Rhine-Main region, the wider Munich area, and north-western Switzerland. Travel by train is well timed, often shorter than two hours from a large city in the south-west.
Buchinger, Mayr, and base fasting
The methodological range on a detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg is the broadest in Germany. Buchinger fasting is the classic form, developed by Otto Buchinger in the 1920s. It begins with one to two preparation days, followed by five to seven fasting days with vegetable broth, freshly pressed juices, water, and herbal tea. Recovery days at the end gradually reintroduce solid food. This method is offered in several Baden-Württemberg houses with medical accompaniment.
The F.X. Mayr cure, developed by Franz Xaver Mayr, is a specific method of intestinal cleansing. It works with Epsom salt for bowel cleansing, alkaline powder for acid-base balance, and very light food such as stale bread and milk or vegan alternatives. The cure typically lasts ten to fourteen days and is offered mainly in the Lake Constance spa venues, often with medical pre- and post-care.
Base fasting works differently. Instead of skipping food, you eat only base-forming foods: vegetables, fruit, herbs, and some nuts. Acid-forming foods such as meat, fish, dairy, grains, and sugar are left out. This form is gentler than therapeutic fasting and is often the better choice for beginners. On the Swabian Jura and in the central Black Forest, base fasting is offered more frequently than on Lake Constance.
Juice cures with cold-pressed juices from fruit, vegetables, herbs, and roots often run as a shorter three- to five-day version. Gentle yoga, hikes in the Black Forest or on Lake Constance, sauna sessions, and liver compresses accompany the detox format in most programmes. Yoga Nidra, guided deep relaxation in a lying position, is a common evening element.
Who books a detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg
Participants on a detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg typically come from Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Freiburg, and the Lake Constance area. A clear subgroup travels from the Rhine-Main region and north-western Switzerland, especially to the Lake Constance Mayr cures and the high-Black-Forest fasting houses. Women form the majority in nearly all groups, with a share between seventy and ninety percent.
The age range stretches from the late thirties to the early sixties, with most participants between the mid-forties and mid-fifties. Professional backgrounds include consulting, academic, creative, and leadership roles. A clear subgroup are working professionals in mid- to senior-level positions, looking for a complete reset after long project phases.
The Lake Constance Mayr clientele differs from the high-Black-Forest fasting clientele. Mayr travellers tend to be older and more affluent, with longer retreat durations and a higher price level. High-Black-Forest travellers tend to be younger, with shorter retreat durations and a sportier component through hikes. The base-fasting clientele on the Swabian Jura mixes beginners and returning fasters.
Medical clarification is mandatory for longer therapeutic-fasting and Mayr stays. Anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid issues, or other chronic conditions should discuss this with the house's medical staff before booking. Some Baden-Württemberg venues offer a preparatory examination and an accompanying consultation during the retreat, others work with clarification through the participant's family doctor. Beginners typically land in base fasting or a juice cure, advanced fasters in longer Buchinger or Mayr programmes.
Season, daily rhythm, and prices
A detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg works year-round, with two clear peak seasons. In January and February many participants book a detox journey as an annual reset after the holidays. A second wave runs in September and October. Lake Constance runs particularly evenly across the year because the mild climate makes Mayr cures comfortable in winter as well. The high Black Forest peaks from May to October, complemented by snowshoe detox weeks in January and February.
Seven-day therapeutic fasting and ten-day Mayr programmes are the most common booking lengths, complemented by three-to-five-day juice cures as a weekend variant. The Swabian Jura has a shorter main season from April to October, because the high plain is rough in winter.
The typical daily rhythm in a Baden-Württemberg detox programme begins with a morning routine. In Mayr programmes on Lake Constance: Epsom salt for bowel cleansing on the first day, then abdominal massage and slow chewing of a small portion of stale bread with milk or an oat alternative. In Buchinger programmes in the Black Forest: warm water with lemon, a short yoga flow, then a cup of tea. The late morning stays open for a hike, a sauna session, or a spa treatment. At noon broth or juice. Afternoon brings a second activity, evening again broth or juice.
Price range for a detox holiday in Baden-Württemberg runs typically from five hundred to fourteen hundred euro for five to seven days including accommodation, fasting provision, and medical accompaniment. Mayr programmes on Lake Constance often run between twelve hundred and twenty-four hundred euro for ten days. Therapeutic fasting in the Black Forest typically runs between eight hundred and fifteen hundred euro for seven days. Anyone wanting to file the journey as a tax-deductible preventive measure should clarify this with the venue before booking.
