FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a vision quest?
A vision quest is an ancient rite of passage rooted in indigenous traditions. You spend a designated period of time alone in nature – often fasting and in silence – to gain inner clarity, consciously navigate life transitions, and deepen your connection with yourself and the natural world. At Retreat Urlaub, you'll find 83 vision quest retreats that offer professional guidance on this powerful journey.
Who is a vision quest suitable for?
A vision quest is suitable for anyone standing at a crossroads in life, seeking clarity about their next steps, or longing for profound personal transformation. Whether you're considering a career change, starting fresh after a separation, reflecting at midlife, or seeking spiritual deepening – the vision quest offers a safe container for deep self-encounter. No prior experience is needed, but a willingness to embrace solitude, silence, and nature is essential.
How long does a vision quest last and what does the process look like?
A traditional vision quest spans 7 to 12 days and is divided into three phases: preparation (separating from everyday life, introduction to the ritual and the group), the threshold time (usually 3 to 4 days and nights alone in nature, often fasting), and reintegration (returning to the community, sharing experiences, and integration). Some providers also offer shorter formats of 4 to 5 days. Browse our 83 listings to find the format that suits you best.
Is it safe to fast alone in nature for several days?
Yes, because during a professionally guided vision quest you are never truly alone. Experienced facilitators are always nearby and reachable, with clear safety protocols and regular check-ins in place. You will be thoroughly prepared for your solo time and given guidance on dealing with weather, orientation, and physical challenges. Water is available to you during the threshold time. If you have serious health concerns, it's advisable to consult both the retreat provider and your doctor beforehand.
How much does a vision quest cost?
Prices for vision quest retreats vary depending on duration, location, and the level of guidance provided. At Retreat Urlaub, prices range from €99 to €11.900, with an average price of €1.764. Typically, the price includes preparation, support during your solo time, meals before and after the threshold period, and the integration phase. Check the individual listings for exact details on what's included.
What do I need to bring to a vision quest?
Most providers will send you a detailed packing list in advance. Generally, you'll need weatherproof outdoor gear (tent or tarp, sleeping bag, sleeping pad), warm layered clothing, rain protection, a water bottle, a journal, and any personal ritual objects. Since you'll be fasting during your solo time, food is usually not needed. Most importantly: comfortable, nature-appropriate clothing and the inner readiness to fully engage in the process.
Where do vision quest retreats take place?
Vision quest retreats take place in natural wilderness settings – in forests, mountains, near lakes, or in desert landscapes. Popular regions include the Alps, Scandinavian wilderness areas, the Mediterranean, and natural areas in Germany and Austria, among others. The location is carefully chosen to offer seclusion, safety, and a powerful natural backdrop. Explore our 83 listings to discover vision quests in a wide variety of locations.
How do I prepare for a vision quest?
Good preparation begins weeks before the actual retreat. Many providers offer preparatory calls or meetings where you can clarify your intention and discuss practical questions. In daily life, practices like meditation, spending time in nature, journaling, and consciously reducing distractions (e.g., social media) can help you attune inwardly to the experience. A gentle dietary adjustment before the fast may also be beneficial. Exact preparation varies by provider – check the individual offerings on Retreat Urlaub for specific guidance.
