Yin yoga aims to relax internal organs and muscles and help the body achieve inner peace. In contrast to dynamic yang yoga, this type of yoga is a calm and predominantly passive form of yoga. Yin yoga is characterized by the fact that the exercises are mainly performed in a seated or lying position. The name for this style of yoga was coined in 1981 by Sukadev Bretz, the founder of Yoga Vidya. The term Yin comes from the well-known Yin and Yang of Chinese medicine.
