FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does a hiking holiday cost?

Prices for a guided hiking holiday roughly fall between 450 and 1,600 euros per person for one week. The lower end is set by simple guesthouses in low mountain regions such as the Eifel, Black Forest or Bavarian Forest with half board and guided day tours. Here you usually land between 450 and 700 euros for seven nights. The mid range from 700 to 1,100 euros covers upscale hotels in alpine areas, Mediterranean islands or well-equipped mountain hotels with sauna, organic cuisine and smaller group sizes. The premium range of 1,100 to 1,600 euros includes comfortable hiking hotels with their own guide, spa area and usually full board, often with extra programming such as yoga, fascia work or mindfulness sessions. Multi-day tours with luggage transfer between stages range from 800 to 1,500 euros depending on route and comfort. What is included varies a lot: some operators charge guiding separately while others include it by default. Cable car passes, entrance fees or transfers from the train station should be checked on the operator's detail page before you commit to a programme.

When is the best time to travel for a hiking holiday?

The best travel time depends mainly on the altitude of your chosen region. For low mountain ranges in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the window from early May to late October is ideal. Early summer in June brings flowering meadows, long days and comparatively empty trails. In high mountains many paths only open in late June once remaining snow has melted, and close again in mid October. Here the high season from July to mid September is most reliable. In the Mediterranean, meaning Mallorca, Sardinia, Crete, Madeira, the Algarve or Andalusia, the calendar flips. Peak summer is too hot for hiking; the best time runs from March to May and from mid September to late November. In mild winters, lower elevations are even walkable from December to February. Anyone sensitive to heat should plan deliberately for September or October in Central Europe, when temperatures usually range from 14 to 22 degrees and the air is clearer. Anyone seeking flowering alpine meadows should aim for mid June. As a rule, the shoulder seasons in May and September are often the most beautiful mix of stable weather and quiet trails.

What experience do I need for a hiking holiday?

Most guided hiking holidays only require solid basic fitness as built up by regular walking, light sports or cycling. Anyone who walks briskly for two to three hours once or twice a week can comfortably handle classic low mountain and gentle alpine tours. Daily stages there usually cover 12 to 18 kilometres with 300 to 600 vertical metres. Demanding mountain tours with 1,000 vertical metres and more assume that you prepare deliberately for at least two months before the trip. Anyone planning to hike several consecutive days should simulate that in training, for example with two back-to-back hiking weekends beforehand. Pilgrim trails such as the Camino rarely demand elevation but instead mental endurance for long flat stages. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required on alpine tours with ridge sections or narrow paths; this will be stated in the tour description. If unsure, an honest conversation with the operator before booking is sensible. Most providers indicate a difficulty grade on a scale of one to five, and reputable operators will politely turn away guests who are clearly underprepared rather than place them on a tour beyond their level.

Which regions are particularly popular for hiking holidays?

In the German-speaking area Bavaria, Tyrol, South Tyrol and Swiss mountain regions top the popularity lists. In Germany the Black Forest, Allgäu, Bavarian Forest, Eifel and Harz are the classic hiking regions. Austria scores with Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia and Styria; Switzerland with the Bernese Oberland, Valais, Graubünden and Ticino. Internationally the Italian Dolomites, the Aosta Valley and the Ligurian Cinque Terre are highly rated. For Mediterranean walking, Mallorca's Tramuntana, Sardinia's Supramonte, Madeira's levada paths and the Cretan gorges count among the top destinations. Anyone seeking an Atlantic coast heads for the Portuguese Algarve, Brittany or the Scottish Highlands. Pilgrim trails such as the Camino Frances in Spain, the Olav Way in Norway and the Lechweg from Lech am Arlberg to Füssen are worlds of their own with large followings. Which region fits you is decided by three factors: desired effort, landscape type and travel season. In peak summer high altitudes and northern coasts are at their best; in shoulder season the Mediterranean and low mountains shine.

How do I get to a hiking holiday?

Most hiking regions in the German-speaking area are surprisingly well connected by train. Direct or connecting routes reach most alpine valleys, the Black Forest, Allgäu, Tyrol, South Tyrol or the Bernese Oberland. Travelling by train has the advantage that many hiking hotels offer station transfers or are reachable directly on foot from the platform. The last kilometres to the hotel can usually be covered by hiking bus, taxi or on foot. For international destinations such as Mallorca, Madeira, Crete or the Canaries, flying is standard, often with an organised rental car or group transfer from the airport. On many multi-day tours with luggage transfer, the operator arranges the transfer to the start point and from the end point back. For pilgrim trails, arrival by train or bus to the relevant starting stage is the usual route. In smaller alpine valleys it is worth checking regional bus lines that are often free for hikers if the accommodation issues a guest card. A detailed arrival recommendation is provided by every operator on the booking page.

What is included in the price of a hiking holiday?

The standard scope of a guided hiking holiday includes accommodation with half board, meaning breakfast and dinner, plus guided day hikes with an experienced guide. Many operators also include a packed lunch for the on-trail picnic. Drinks during tours, meaning water or tea, are sometimes provided by the host and sometimes carried in your own pack. What is often not included is travel to the destination, drinks at dinner, entry fees for museums or spas, cable cars for ascents and descents, and tips for the guide. On multi-day tours with stage changes, luggage transfer between accommodations is usually included, as are detailed route descriptions or GPS data and pre-arranged hotel bookings across all stages. Wellness areas such as sauna and pool are freely accessible in most hiking hotels, while massages and treatments cost extra. Travel cancellation insurance is hardly ever included in the price but should be taken out separately. Before booking it is always wise to read the inclusions list carefully on the detail page, as packages differ notably between operators.

Who are the typical guests on a hiking holiday?

The typical guest profile on a guided hiking holiday is adult, health-conscious and curious about nature. About two thirds of guests are between 35 and 65, in classic alpine hiking hotels more often 50 plus. Women slightly outnumber men in many groups, especially on tours with a yoga or mindfulness element. Professionally, guests come from the entire spectrum, frequently teachers, therapists, care workers, the self-employed, executives and people in life transitions. Many travel alone and find connection in the group quickly, as walking together is a natural icebreaker. Couples often book moderate tours where both partners can find a comparable level. Families with teenagers choose classic low mountain hiking weeks with shorter stages. What all guests share is the wish for movement in nature, a clear rhythm of exertion and recovery, and a break from the digital everyday. Anyone seeking noise or action is in the wrong place; anyone who appreciates silence, conversations on the side and deep evening tiredness will feel at home.
